First Sunday in Lent

What a short Gospel reading for us today. Clearly, we need to keep Lent simple and I love Bishop Paul’s letter to us all. He reminds us that during Lent we need to pray, fast and give alms. When we pray it must be ‘more than asking God for favours or help with the things we can’t manage.’ As we fast, we need to remember that we should put ‘treats’ aside, as they do not last. We need to recognise that by fasting we are putting our trust in God that He will give us what we need. Almsgiving during this time particularly, ‘shows solidarity with our neighbour’, and can be as simple as the gift of time. What will you be doing this Lent?
